Womens ice hockey in the olympics in jeapordy

The sport of womens ice hockey in the olympics is in jeapordy of being an event anymore in the olympics. There is no parody between countries wich means that there is no real competition for the United states and Canada. For the sport to continue the international olympic comitte (IOC) will need to see investing resources and also seeeing devolpment in progress in the game itself. Some score examples from this year are...
America 12 China 1
Canada 18 Slovakia 0
One reason why america might have the sucsess it does could be because of Title IX wich says "No person in the U.S. shall, on the basis of sex be excluded participation in,or denied benifits of,or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving federal aid."
For example Boston College is a private school so it can spread its funds around how it wants to, on the other hand Boston University is receiving federal aid therefore they have to spend the same amount of money for mens sports as they do womens that is why BU does not have a football program anymore.

Probing question:
Do you think if other countries adopted an idea like Title IX would that help them gain the progress and resources that the IOC needs to see from countries?

  1. I think that if other countries adopted something similar to Title IX, progress would definitely be seen from other countries. However, I do not think that the progress is enough of what the IOC wants to see. For example, some countries' educational programs and activities may not receive financial aid from their government. In another view, if it would take a law to enforce it, I feel that it would be a while until it sees true accepted effectiveness. In addition, progress would depend on the culture of the country. I would think that our country has a culture unlike any other in the world. Progress may be tied to the country's way of life. Some other countries may not see men and women as equal. In conclusion, I do not think that a Title IX for other countries would bring the desired amount of progress. It may only bring little.

  2. I think if other countries adopted something about the same to Title IX, like something along those lines that worked for them, it would work. The IOC has high expectations and won't completely see what they want to see. The IOC expects change, but what if countries do not want 100% change? they only want all sports/games to be accepted.

  3. Yes, I think that adopting a policy like title IX would help. But, I do not think that the USA and Canada have an advantage, I see it as other countries with a disadvantage. The United States has made it a long way to come up with something like title IX and has been rewarded with wins. This is very interesting to me as well. Being interested in hockey help me relate and put this into a broader perspective policy. It is important and I hope that the olympics does not lose woman's ice hockey.

  4. I agree with what Adams says. I believe that the policies of Title IX would greatly benefit whoever puts it into action because it is a great way to lower discrimination against women. It should be a milestone in the treatment of women and should definitely get more women into sports. I think that the USA does have an advantage because of its well run system but I think that we as a nation worked for this great system. Not many other countries can say this about their nation because much of it is really flawed but if they put Title IX into effect it would definitely benefit them.

  5. If other countries adopted an idea just like title 9 I agree that it would help them gain progress and resources like the IOC wants. But the thing to keep in mind here is that this will take time, if they want to see change they need those countries to come up with a title 9 type thing and maybe give them a few Olympic games to see if it will work out for the better of their womens ice hockey teams. If title 9 came into affect in these countries it would greatly benefit womens ice hockey in that country and other womens sports. I know that when I read this article in the USA hockey magazine I found it unbelievable that they might have to get rid of the sport all together just because some countries cant get enough resources to be competitive, I hope this sport stays in the Olympics and that these countries take notice to this problem with their womens sports.

  6. if any Country was to put an idea like Title IX into practice not only would the IOC benefit but the entire nation would. The Title will incorperate many different ideas into not only sports but in major buisnesses as well thus helping the economy. This may only help the IOC in the near future but over time will create ideas for other titles to better further women rights. so Title IX is not only a way to help keep the Woman's Hockey program in the winter olympics but it will act as a steping stone for future plans to be put in place.

  7. Being able to adopt the Title into other countries would help out the IOC immensely because it would allow fair competition for other countries like the U.S and Canada as opposed to shutting the program down because the resources were so poor. As good as funding is, there is also the inclusion that the programs in these other countries will have to develop their sport so that it becomes a more challenging activity and it provides the teams with equal rights to play without discrimination. Being able to adopt this Title into their sports programs would allow a further breakthrough for women's rights and keep everyone satisfied with equal treatment and chances to excel in women's hockey.

  8. I believe that yes, putting this policy (title IX) into other countries' governments would help find equality between men and women, in different scenarios. Within these scenarios would be: jobs, sports, and entertainment. I believe that even if there was a policy put into place in any of these areas, it still would not meet what the IOC wants it to be. What the IOC really wants it to be, is a policy that would make women even more equal to men, espicially in sports, and participate just as much as them. I personally think that other countries should adopt this title, but also, they should expand it to other regions of the country. Move it into, say, the areas where sexual discrimination is great, and try and treat those areas. Of course, this wouldn't really end up like the IOC or any other person would want it to end up like, but it would be a good starting point, and a good base to build off of.

  9. I do not think that if title nine was put into affect in other countries that it would affect the progress of the country. I think that if each country allows them to have a women's hockey team in the first place, that they would have the top players either way. I do not know what exactly is meant by the IOC requiring certain resources, but the countries skill is represented by the best players in the country, and I don't see why they wouldn't currently have the best players on the team.

  10. Any way that lowers discrimination is always good. I think that title IX will make somewhat of an effect on a country because neither man or woman will be looked upon differently when playing sports. I think that if more countries participate in this than it will help a lot of people lose their stereotypes about woman's teams. If woman are more confident about the way other people look at their sport, then they will feel more motivated to do better and become more competitive towards each other.

  11. I think that there are two sides to this argument. On the first side, this could be bad, because it would cost the countries more money to support women's hockey. On the other hand, it would raise money by having people watch the events. Something that could go wrong is that people might not watch women's sports, simply because most people watch men's sports and do not pay as much attention to women's. This brings us back to the money concern; if people don't watch, it won't make money. I believe, however that bringing Title IX would help. Not only would it give talented women the oppertunity to play the game they love and make money, but it would also give countries another chance to accel at something.

  12. Yes, I believe that intruding the Title IX will help improve women sports in some ways. Although, just because women will be given the chance to play sports does not mean they will because of their cultural expectations. In America women are given a large amount of freedom compared to some other countries. All in all though, I believe that Title IX will make some improvements and will benefit countries. It will create more equality along with more opportunities for countries.

  13. I was not in class the day that Brian presented this topic. However by reading the other peoples post's I would also believe that the Title IX program will hep with women's sports. One reason is that if counties pay more attention to the sports that they disregarded before those sports will start to get better and be able to compete with everybody else. Also this will get more interest into womens sports. If the games get less one sided then more people will watch and make the sport better publicly as well.

  14. I think think if other countries adopted the title 9 act it would of course help their women's sports. Many other countries don't give women as many rights as men. This only hurts women's sports and and even ability to get a job because they don't get the same training. If all countries were to adopt the act i think there would be a huge increase in the competitiveness of women's sports and we would see other countries improving there own economy because women could go out and work.

  15. I think that if other countries had something similar to title 9, it would for the most part fix this issue. This would force countries to give womens ice hockey just as many benefits as mens, which in most countries would help. But, there are still some countries that are so poor that they might not even allot men's sports with much money. In that case, title 9 wouldn't do much to help women gain funds. Overall, I believe that giving women just as many benefits as men would allow them better coaching and more time to train (because they could afford more ice time). This would definitely increase the level of competitiveness between countries.

  16. I think that a law like title nine would not be as effective as it was here. In other places in the world, society views women as less than men, and some writing on a paper would do little to change that.

  17. I agree with Alex and I think that title nine could be good and bad. Having something like title nine would help the IOC and would allow women to get better training and coaches. But at the same time it would either cost the country more money, or the funds for men's hockey would decrease greatly.

  18. Title IX protects the equality of women; if other countries adopted a similar law then they would be able to have similar success to that of title IX. The IOC would also benefit immensely as a result. Most countries still don’t think of women as equal to men, therefore creating something like title IX would be difficult.

  19. I definitely think that if title xi is brought into all the other countries participating in athletic competition will help because if the sex issue is brought to an end, the International Olympic Committee will recongnize the changes that are happening, and it will convince them that ending a sport like womens hockey is not needed. If title xi spreads to other countries and allows women with hockey skill to compete for their country, more teams will be brought into the olympics for a larger variety of competition, making the Olympics what it really should be.

  20. Yes i believe it will. I think that if title 9 is put into affect in other countries than women's sporting events would become larger. Woman's sporting i beleive is important due to the ammount of revenue a professional womens soft ball leauge for example would bring in. With title 9 in affect it would help people look at women differently and attract them to women's sports.

  21. I feel like if other countries adopted the Title IX there would be a lot of different view points depending on that country. In other countries men are still viewed as the dominate figure, expecially in sports. For example in other countries field hockey is a male dominated sport. Over all, i think that if other countries did adopt this idea they could certianly would help womans sports advance gradualy.

  22. I think that title XI would help because it gives everybody a fair chance, and it would boost up the competition. It would help the equality rights for women, and potentially end the whole problem of unequality in sports. With hockey being one of the major sports in the world, as well as in the olympics, I think that if the sport of women's ice hockey was taken away then it would just create more problems.

  24. I think that if other countries were to adopt something like title IX, it would work to an extent. other countries are not as "sports crazy" as the Unites States, they do not have as many problems, so something like title IV with its own variations would help other countries. I also believe that this might not work in other countries for the same reason Justin said.

  25. I believe more then yes, if other countries developed policies which incorporated funding and equal funding for all sports agencies, both men and woman’s there would be a better outcome. The man’s ice-hockey in countries is not a probably. The only reason that woman’s is a problem is because they lack the funding from proper institutions to actively promote their sport. Title IX works in America, it would work in other places too.

  26. I do believe that intruding the Title IX will help improve women sports in other countries. Because of cultural differences, some countries may not be as open with women's sports as the United States, but it would improve it.

  27. I believe that title nine can be a good idea and also a bad idea. Looking at title nine many countries could benefit from it. Title nine gives everyone a fair chance to do something they want to do. I believe that this will allow other woman in other countries that have dominant male sports would be allowed to play them. Allowing woman to play them means those women are equal to men. Equality for woman is what life should be.
