Current Event 11/4 Zack Graham

My current event was on how the midterm election affected the immigration reform. Since the republicans won the house they now have some power in the government and are going to try and push "The Pledge of America" as the way the immigration reform should go. The pledge want is based on border security, immigration law enforcement and and visa security. It went on to explain how the republicans were indirectly supporting Arizona's immigration laws.
If the democrats won however they had already planned a completely different immigration reform. There reform was set around four pillars. These four pillars are biometric social security cards, creating a system for admitting temporary workers, beefing up border security, and implementing a path for the legalization of certain undocumented immigrants.
Chairperson King, who is Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security and a republican, for a re-interpreting of the 14th amendment. This was the amendment that gave all African Americans citizenship in 1868. This is also the only amendment that talks about citizenship.
Even though this is not first on the lists of issues it is still a major problem and may hopefully be dealt with over the next couple of years.

Probing Question

Which plan would be better for this country, the Democrats "Four Pillars" or the Republicans "Pledge of America"?

  1. The Republican's "Pledge of America" plan would be better. I say this because at least they are going to be getting rid of the Illegals (aka Deporting them). The Democrats just let them keep on living in our country, and will eventually give them full citizenship. That is not constitutional. In fact, it is not even American. Why would you want Illegal immigrants that broke the law, and illegally entered our country to stay in our country and live in it, taking money from both tax payers (through financial aid, welfare, etc.) and companies alike (stealing jobs). I believe that the Republican's plan is best because it gets rid of these illegals and make sure that they don't come in our country again.

  2. I disagree with Garret I think the Democratic ideas are better if we were to accept the immigrants they will in fact produce jobs for the rest of the United States. If the Republicans got their way and they were deporting Illegal immigrants it would cost a lot of money to round up the illegals and if they want citizenship they must go through a screening process in order to tell if they have done things that are illegal and if they haven't then why deport them. it would cost a lot of money to round them up for what most illigal immigrants who get caught will try again so the process is never ending and if you just give them citizenship they will not have to get here illegaly because they can get citizenship thus the Boarder patrol can be cut not completly out but slimed down because there is no need to have so many. so without a dought the Democratics have a more economical perspective on the situation.

  3. I think we need to find a common ground between both.it would be impossible to get all the immigrants out cheaply and for the people that aren't doing illegal thing and are just working for their family's have no intentions on hurting this country they just want a stable life with a job to provide for their family's.i disagree with garrets perspective that all illegal immigrants are bad i think if he was in the same position as those people he would do the same thing.

  4. I agree with the democratic view of the four pillars. Like Ryan said, the Republicans plan would cost too much money and would take up way too much time. If the Republicans got their way, it would cause many problems too. Police, and other officials would spend too much time searching for illegal immigrants and put more focus into that matter than anything else. For some police who don't believe in immigration they could easily go crazy with this and put all their time and effort in to finding and deporting immigrants. Also like Ryan said, the process of screening illegals in order to confirm or deny access to citizenship would cost a fortune and take up a lot of time. With the Democratic approach, there could potentially be less illegal immigration. Statistics show a lot of immigrants come here to make money to send back to their families. If we would give more immigrants a chance to come here legally for work purposes then they would not have to sneak over. If they are coming here for other reasons however, then they would still have to apply for legal citizenship. Neither of the proposals will completely abolish illegal immigration, but the Democratic approach has a more cost savvy and time efficient spin on it.

  5. I think that the "Four Pillars" would be a better option. I agree with Amber that if we give immigrants a chance to come here legally for work then they wouldn't try sneaking over. The democratic option is also a lot cheaper because we wouldn't have to pay for all of the security and searching for illegal immigrants. Also, if the "Pledge of America" were to win then a lot of people would be annoyed when they are suspected of being an illegal immigrant. Garret mentioned that they would be taking money away from tax payers, but having immigrants gives us a higher population which in the end helps us.

  6. I think that the "Four Pillars" would be a better option than the "Pledge of America." I agree with Jess and Amber because who would want to get suspected of being an illegal immigrant? Wouldn't you just want to leave free and give our country a better outcome of population. Having the "Pledge of America" like Ryan said it would cost too much money, we don't need to keep wasting money on ideas, that do not work. Why not have an option that a lot more people agree on and save money and have more people in our country not sneaking over. The "Four Pillars" would save our country a lot more money becuse we wouldn't need it for security and having people be out all day asking the same question and accusing others.

  7. I think that the "Four Pillars" is a lot better because it doesn;t get rid of them. If you get rid of them our economy would go way down. They may take jobs from Americans but they also make some. They start own compnaies and that creats more oppourtnuities. They also do all the jobs that the poeple do not want to do. If you do the "Pledge" then you will lose a lot of jobs and also say people who are not illeagal immigrants are. That is not protecting peoples rights and that is not what we envisioned in a demoracy.

  8. I don't think that it is fair to say one is necessarily "better" than the other. It is more of an opinion topic. My opinion is that the republicans have more of an argument toward this subject. With their "Pledge of America" concept, they get rid of illegal immigrants (or some of them, anyway). There is a major job crisis as it is, with many good, legal, Americans being unemployed for reasons they cannot control. I think that taking the illegal immigrants out of the country, and following the Pledge of America side of the argument, would result in a better economy, more job oppertunities for people who deserve them, and many other benefits. As I said before, this may not be the "better" option, it's just my opinion.

  9. I think that the four pillars idea proposed my the democrats would be a better plan, although I do agree with Brian on finding a compromise between the two. I think that the four pillars would work best because we save a lot of money on not needing as much security, and our economy wouldn't drop at all because the four pillars is not designed to get rid of all the immigrants. I think that we cannot get rid of them because they look up to us for help, and thats why they come here to seek a better life, and we should be helping them out to fit in with our society, not kick them out.

  10. I believe that the democratic ideas are better because by accepting the immigrants, our economy will prosper. They will provide business for our country, which will help with our national income. As we are in a rescission right now, every little bit of income helps. Although this is better, I agree with both Buzz and Brian that some sort of compromise must be met between the two ideas, instead of going on the extreme end of either side's idea. Compromise always brings some type of peace and leaves everyone somewhat happy in the end.

  11. I believe that the democrats plan of attack is better thought out because it addresses the current economic status of the United States. Without the immigrants here, our country would most likely be different in multiple ways, one being we would not be as agriculturally solid. They basically bring the back labor. In this day in age, it seems that less Americans are willing to take a low level job which are currently being filled by immigrants who are trying to make a better life. With the democrats addressing these issues, the employment benefits to both the workers and the employers will be great. I also agree with Buzz, Brian, and Adam that a compromise should in some way be made so that the two groups are not going to the extremes on either end.

  12. I believe that the democratic view could be the best of the two views. Illegal immigrants are not all bad people, so why do they have to suffer such a harsh punishment? If the United States made all slaves citizens, why can't we do the same for illegal immigrants? Illegal immigrants don't come here to harm us, they are just trying to make some extra money for their families and escape from danger, poverty and starvation. Anyways, it would cost more to deport illegal immigrants (especially in the condition the economy is now) than to leave them alone.

  13. I would agree with "The Pledge of America" because of it's simplicity and how it focuses on improving on what we are already doing. However if it really intends to try and deport all illegal immigrants i can't agree with it completely. The cost to locate, track down, and then transport all illegal aliens would be completely not worth it. Plus they would come across all the problems where kids were born in the U.S. so the parents get to stay just wasting more time and money. So while they should focus on this issue there are bigger things to deal with and costs that are much more important than wasting money on this.

  14. I would agree with "the pledge of America". Reason for this would be that it is an improving process. We always need improvement. But I also believe that the democratic view would be a better way. With the republicans all immigrants would be sent back where they came from and then they would decrease our population and cause some businesses to fall. Many immigrants play a big role on the agriculture of the United States.
So I believe that not either plan is better for the country I believe that some things would apply to the democratic view but some things would apply to the republican view. I would not choose either one of these.
