Current Event Presentation

For my current event I had done an article called "Native American Farmers Agree to Settle decade-old Discrimination case". In this article there were many things that were important. This article was about a lawsuit against the United States Department of Agriculture that has been going on for more then a decade. In this lawsuit the USDA is now agreeing to give Native American farmers $760 million dollar settlement. This settlement is because in the past the USDA had overlooked many loans that Native American farmers have wanted, they have always given the loans to the white American farmers. In the article there was one woman who was very happy to have this lawsuit. She had said that she was so glad for the native America children who are going to become farmers, because now they are going to have a better system for loans. The lawsuit will be put into affect after the final approval by the U.S District Court next year.

Some of the questions that were asked in class:

Does this lawsuit apply to all tribes in the U.S?

The Choctaw tribe and the Sioux are some of the many tribes that are affected by this lawsuit. These are the only tribes that were mentioned in the articles that I had found.

How much does each tribe get from the lawsuit?

In the article it says "that uniform farmers will receive $50,000 after presenting evidence of bias to an impartial adjudicator" And farmers who have had major damages from not getting the loans that they have wanted by discrimination will receive $250,000 for all the damages.

Probing Question:

Why do you think the Native Americans were discriminated for so long?

  1. I think that there are several reasons why Native Americans were discriminated in America for so long. It can be related to the discrimination of blacks as well. From the beginning, when Europeans first came to America and pushed the Indians aside, they treated them bad. I think that no one has questioned why to push them away and just follow suit. Because this happens, nobody will step up and try to change it. We had so much power over them that we used it to our advantage and have never looked back or given it second thoughts.

  2. I think that the Native Americans were discriminated against for so long just because of who they are. They are the economically the poorest group, and I think that people think that they should not even associate themselves with them mainly because of their nationality and lifestyles. I agree with what Adam said about how people just follow what everyone else does. It is like a chain reaction; if a certain person doesn't want to get involved with the Native Americans, then they don't think that they should either. Also, I think that they were discriminated against for so long because the white Americans think that they are the best, and that they don't need to talk to anyone else but their own kind I guess you could say.

I think that things should change, and that everyone needs to take a look back on what is going on around them, and take matters into their own hands. There is no need to discriminate against, and I think people need to realize that and fast.

  3. I think the Native Americans were discriminated for so long because of how poor they are. People don't talk to them or make any attempt because their language and their cultures. Their whole nationality is different to us, but if we put ourselves in their perspectives it would teach us that they are apart of our country and they deserve the respect and consideration about their lifestyles. Skin color or ethnicity shouldn't change anything. They are still humans just like me and you. Things need to change to make our country stronger as a whole. Native Americans don't deserve to be discriminated.

  4. I believe that the native Americans were discrimated for so long because the citizens of the United States did not know the truth about what actually happened. The poeple of th U.S thought that the Native Americans wanted to move but really thy were told to move. Also the Native Americans were said to be evil warriors and that we should be scared of them. The once they were defeated poeple decided it wasokto not care about them. The Natie Americans are still being discrimated today though as well. Some people do not care and others do not want them to get any help from the government.

  5. Like Emily said, I also believe that the Indians were discriminated against for so long just because who they were. As Americans, we have and always have had trouble accepting people that are "different" from us in any way. It goes way back in history with people assuming that just because they were not the same as us that they didn't belong. It tends to be people's natural reaction that if someone or something is different then that means that they are of lesser value and are not as important. I think because the Indians were more on the vulnerable side they quickly became more of a minority and stayed that way due to many historical evens like assimilation that kept decreasing their value of importance. Once assimilation started taking place people started to forget that Indians were also Americans and just assumed they were of a completely different species. Even though we took over their land, we still seem to think we had the right to. Throughout history discrimination has occurred against the Native Americans, and not just to a degree.

  6. anyone who isn't like your own, you subconsciously tend to think different of. you may not even mean to do it sometimes. i'm sure you can name a time in your life when you've done it by accident. i agree with amber when she talked about how people are not accepting of one another because of race factors. i beieve that race and differences of cultures played a big role in discrimination, and still does today.

  7. I think it is possible that Native Americans were discriminated against in the loan process mostly do to their history. They have always been hunters, and nobody had ever given them a lesson on farming. Like we discussed in class, the Native Americans were thrown a bunch of land and told to make use of it, but with no instruction as to how. Nowadays, Indians of course have learned much more about agriculture and are probably well capable of keeping a great farm if they had the money. I think that their history of being unknowledgable (when it came to farming) could have caused loaning agencies to stereotype them as still being this way and thus discriminate against them for that reason. They probably thought that the white man would be more successful so they gave them the loans instead.

  8. I think that the Native American's were discriminated for so long because we were able to take advantage of them for hundreds of years, so people would still believe that if they were able to do it in the past, discriminating them now wouldn't be such a problem. The lawsuit would be able to provide many families with loans so they can farm instead of giving it to the white farmers who are already so well off. Just because people have a different skin color or they believe in something other than CHristianity doesn't mean that anyone has the right to challenge that or think that they are a lesser group. I agree with Emily and Zack, that people should realize that discrimination is not needed and that people continue not to care about the minorities that live in the U.S. I think that people should take responsibility for what they're doing and think about the effect that discrimination will have on an ethnically different group of people.

  9. Like Andrea said, I think people subconsciously discriminate against those who are different, the Americans do this especially. I remember in a picture we saw in class that Native Americans were fascinated with African Americans. Instead of treating them badly, they were praising their different skin color and acted as if they were mighty. I think once the Native Americans were viewed as different and kicked out of their own land, their treatment went downhill from their. Stronger Americans outnumbered the Indians and viewed them as lesser human beings. They started to control the Indians and take advantage of them for their own benefit. It then became sort of tradition to hate the Indians because they were at the bottom of the totem pole in society.

  10. I think the Native Americans were discriminated and still are in some ways for a couple reasons. First it's there lack of defense. Native Americans aren't modernized as much as the American people are. Native Americans used bows, and horses while the American's had vehicles, modern guns that were automatic. America's defense was the New York Yankees of war compared to the Native Americans

Secondly i believe it was their lack of money. Native Americans didn't have the wealth of the Americans and the American Government. Money is Power, and that is exactly why the Americans were able to do so much discriminating to the Native Americans.

  11. I think the Native Americans were discriminated against for so long because they are a minority in this country they make up less than 1% of our entire country's population so I can see how they could have been over looked. Plus with the government moving them around so much and taking their land they thought that they could get away with ignoring them with the farming business as well. Most people today still consider the Native Americans to be at the lower end of our population so they continue to get treated as such.

  12. I think that Native Americans were discriminated against for so long because we thought we were better than them because we couldn't understand their languages or their religions. We were so set in our beleifs that we couldn't accept theirs. We thought that their worship of their spirits was a sin aganist our God. a God they probably didn't even beleive in in teh first place. We discriminated them because they were different. Because they were darker skinned and less world travelled. We came from a different continent and said we were better than the people who had lived here before us. We killed many of them and they became a minority. In our system the minority does not get their way. Thus we ignored their wishes and treated them they way we did and sometimes still do.

  13. I believe the Indians were discriminated against for so long because they aren't really part of the country. The Department of Agriculture is obviously going to give loans and grants to people who will be paying taxes and are completely apart of the country before they give it to someone on an Indian reservation who only pays federal tax. This is only surfacing now because of Obama's push to make right past wrongs. If Indians want to be considered for the same money American citizens are applying for then they should have to abide by all the same laws and taxes that any normal American does.

  14. I think that the Native Americans were discrimated for so long because they were different. And like Adam said, it's similar to how people discriminated against blacks. Then when they were sent to reservations it was just another reason that they were discriminated. By putting them into their own areas, we were saying that they were less than us and didn't deserve to integrate with us. I agree with Terry when he says that they weren't really part of our country, and they still aren't. Even though they are technically American citizens, no one ever remembers the Indians.

  15. I think the Native Americans have been discriminated for so long since they are such a small percentage of our population. If when the Europeans traveled over to America and the Native Americans took initial power with more people then I think they would have less discrimination. But since they were isolated from almost the beginning it stayed the same in history for awhile. People in history were often afraid to branch out and stand up for the minority and until recently where civil acts movements have been made it remained like this.

  16. Well I believe that this is kind of obvious. Why did we want the Indians out of our country? Because we didn't want any potential enemies in our way. So this discrimination has carried on over the past years. I am not saying that I am against us Americans pushing the Indians out, but I am just pointing out the fact of discrimination. This has not only happened to Indians, it has happened to blacks and asians over the years.

  17. I think that the Native Americans have been discriminated for so long because they are a minority in a society were if you arent like everyone else than you aren't normal so this is the reason the White Americans discriminated the Native Americans. just like other minorities in the United States.
