Follow Up on Current Event.

In class today I was asked some questions that had to with the cuurent event that I had just shared with the class.
One was that, "Why are they allowed to make casinos on the reservations?" They are allowed to make them because they are not going by state laws but by federal laws. In the state of New York it is illegal to gamble but under federal laws they are able to go by federal laws not state laws. Another question asked was, "Where will they make this casino?". They would make the casino on there reservation in North Hampton. The thing is that the state of New York does not want them too because it will cause more traffic in the Hamptons. New York wants them to make it in the suburb of New York City but then they would have to go through a hearing, federal laws, and government backing. That would be no problem because Governer David Patterson already is backing them.
My current event was that the Shinnecock tribe of New York was federally recgonzied after a 32 year struggle to be federally recgonize. They now can build a casino on there reservation because they can go under federal laws not state laws because the state of New York does not permit gambling. They want to make it on Long Island in the Hamptons because that is where they live but the state of New York doesn't want them to make it because traffic in the Hamptons is already so bad. They want it to be made in a suburb of New York City.
Do you think that that by making a casino the reservation will prosper and become rich?

  1. Yes, I do think that a casino would really benefit the reservation. I think this, because the Native Americans, (the poorest in the nation) would be able to create many jobs and profit highly from the casinos. Many people like to gamble and they spend a lot of money in casinos. For reservations in New York, the gain would be even greater since gambling is illegal in the state and residents would be able to go onto reservations and play all they want. The Native Americans would be able to build new homes and schools for citizens of the reservations.

  2. I think that the casino would probably help contribute to the wealth of the reservation, especially because New York doesn't have any casinos of its own. I'm sure it would be much more convenient for citizens to do their gambling in-state, rather than wasting gas money to travel to a whole other state. Also, it bothers me that New York is trying to get them to make it off the reservation. If they are so against casinos in their state then they shouldn't want that. I feel like they might try to steal some of the profit from the Native Americans if they make the casino in NYC. I don't think the Native Americans will give in to NY and set their casino up in NYC because by now, they have probably grown cautious of having things taken from them.

  3. Personally, I think that the casino would not make the Native Americans rich. I do not recall ever hearing of casinos making Native Americans rich. However, it would of course help them with profit. They should not comply with what the state of NY wants, since they have the backing of the federal government and Governor David Paterson. Since they are obviously outside of the state's power, even though they are in the state, they should have the ability to do what they want. Besides, the Hampton seems like the perfect place for a casino. Plus, it would probably yield the largest profit for them.

  4. I think that the casino will benefit the reservation because it will create jobs, as well as money. But in the long run, it could ruin the people in the reservation because it could create gambling habits in people that would not have had them. It could also create crime, which could lead to many other sorts of problems that would potentially ruin the reservation. But overall the money will help to support the reservation in staying around longer.

  5. I believe that the casino would help the reservation greatly. However I do not think that it has the potential to make the porrest populatoin of peope rich. Like the tax with the cigerettes I believe that the casino will also eventually end up giving some of its profits to other places such as the government or the state of New York. Do not get me wrong the casino is a great idea to try and help the reservation get into a place where they can be steadily making money but i do not think that it will make the reservation rich.

  6. I think that the casino will help to create more profit for the reservation. The location of the casino will be good, because there are barely any casinos in New York, if any at all. But, in the current world, the United States is in the midst of an economic depression so less people will have money to gamble away. Overall, I believe that the indians will make decent profit, but there is still that small possibility of failing.

  7. For the reservation this is a great and smart way to make money. taking advantage of being able to gamble is smart and is something we would all do.the casinos will make bank of of this because people who gamble will gamble away all they got and even though thats bad for them your making money so you win

  8. It is possible but highly unlikely that the cassino would make the resservation a lot of money. That is simply my opinion. I don't really know a lot about cassinos so I am probably wrong. Gambling is probably highly profitable for cassinos because people aren't very good at it.

  9. I do not believe that they will become very rich, but I do believe that they can prosper off of this wealth from the casino. You have to remember that they have to pay up-keep, all of the other bills and such, and they have to pay the people that win. They can only get a certain amount of money each day. But, I do believe that through this casino, it would definately help the tribe gain attention, make some money, and get more people to come to their reservation, or to New York itself; because, this would be the only casino in the state of New York.

  10. The building of the Casino on the reservation will have it's pros and cons one pro is that the casino will bring cash flow throughout the reservation that will in deed help with their economic position. But in building this will also bring the oppertunity of gambleing addictions that are common in other Native American Reservations. also in building the casino they will bring tourist onto the reservation that will already be down there for the Hamptons. Thus making the tourist come onto the reservation and pay for things like boarding, food, and other items that most tourist will buy. So the economic gains will not only be in the casino directly but all throughout the resrvation. So in this case the pros definatly out weigh the cons.

  11. I agree that a casino on the reservation would be a great money-maker. I thought it was a great point that Brian brought up saying that gambling is illegal in New York, causing the entire gambling population to go on the reservation. To answer the question at the end of Jake's post, I'm not sure if this would make them "rich," but I do think it would make them a great amount of money in the long-run.

  12. I think a casino would defiantly make the reservation rich, but it would take a very long time for the native americans living on the rez to gain that wealth. I think the first 5-10 years of having a casino on the rez would put the native americans in a great deal of debt, and may live worse than now, but in the end, a SUCCESSFUL casino would create wealth and jobs within the reservation.

  13. Yeah, I also believe that a casino would for sure benefit the reservation, because casinos bring in a lot of money and they could use this money for projects like housing and schooling. Like evan said, it does bring jobs and wealth into the reservation as well, which could benefit families that don't make much money.

  14. I think that the reservation would become rich with the casino being there. Reason for this would be the Economy these days’ people are all about money and the more people gamble the more money will go to the reservation. This also brings more jobs into the reservation just like buzz and Evan had said. And as many people above had said could cause many people to have a gambling problem in the reservation and make the whole idea of having a casino go down the tubes. This could cause many problems for the people running the casino in the reservation.

  15. I would say more then yes. A casino would bring in a lot of revenue to the reservation - if it was one the reservation. If the owners of the casino made it in non-reservation land, with the state tax, then they would lose a lot of money. Most of which wont ever help the reservations community. It's more of a protection agreement or extortion. The state of New York is extorting the native people.
