ASSIGNMENT! Find or Create an Image

So, yesterday in class we heard from everyone regarding their thoughts on the question:

How can groups with different values and norms exist in the same space?

We heard a lot of ideas and opinions. Thank you all for sharing. Please keep in mind that this converstaion was an initial opportunity for sharing. We'll look forward this year to continuing our discussion, fine-tuning our ideas and our understanding.

To help focus our conversation and add another dimension to our learning, please complete the following assignment:

On Monday the 13th, please bring in an image that helps represent the complicated nature of this question/discussion. Please write a quick paragraph as a comment on this post, explaining why you chose the image you did. We'll use the images to propel our discussion forward over the course of the year.

  1. My picture was kind of difficult to explain, but it was a bunch of hands of different colors all grabbing onto another and in the center of the picture is the Earth. I think this picture is meaningful because it shows how all different ethnicity's need to work together so that we can live peacefully on Earth. If everybody helps each other the world would be a happier place. My picture is in color but my printer is silly and only prints out in black and white, sorry!

  2. I brought in a picture of Jackie Robinson with three of his teammates on the Brooklyn Dodgers bench. I chose this image because to me it portrays how a minority first entered sports. It shows a barrier being broken between races. Sports connect the entire world and Jackie Robinson attracted fans from other parts of the world. Now look at how many different backgrounds are represented in major league sports! It brings players together as well as the fans because there is a commonality that they all enjoy.

  3. My picture was a bunch of diferent people all in the same place. The picture showed people of different norms and living styles all living in the same place. I chose this picture because it shows extactly what the question wanted to find out. Although the picture does not explain how they can live together it still shows the bigger picture which is getting to the place where people with diffrent norms can coexist.

  4. My picture was of a circle of dolls from different heritages. The picture showed the dolls holding hands in a circle. I'm guessing that it was probably a dance of some sort. The picture, to me, represented how people coexist. I chose this picture becuase it reminded me of how coexistance is always partrayed to children. It showed us how people can get along and that we shouldn't judge. We were shown pictures of a very similar nature when we were children in this country. I believe that that is the reason we can coexist more easily.

  5. I chose the picture of different races holding hands around the world because it shows how people co-exist in the same place. With everybody working together and living in the same place, the world will be peaceful. We all have different values, but we are living in one world. We all have different ethnicity's existing in the world.

  6. I chose the picture of the collage of many people of different race and ethnicity because I thought it really followed what the essential question was. This collage had a main picture in the center of 4 kids who are all different with the earth in there hands. This just shows that everyone is here on this earth to work together and get along even though we are all different.

  7. I chose to create a collage of a few different pictures depicting the responses that I had to the question for the essay. I chose to put a picture of Jackie Robinson shaking hands with his teammates because it shows how they all come together to play a sport that all three of them love. I chose to the picture of the world with the different religions around it because it shows how people with different beliefs can exist in the same space. I chose the picture with the people of two different races working on the foundation of a structure because I thought that it showed how everyone can work together in the same space without arguing so that they can get the job done. All in all I chose these pictures in my collage because to me they are what show how people with different values and norms can exist in the same space.

  8. The picture I chose was a picture of fractals. A fractal is a shape that is made up of tiny copies of itself when zoomed in. This is related to the idea of chaos theory which says order is created out of chaos and chaos is created out of order. Being in a cycle, both are related to each other. I chose a fractal for my picture because it is never ending and seems to replicate itself. I thought that different groups existing together may be something like this: a natural cycle. In a sense, different groups come together to exist and create an entirely new group over time. This process may repeat continuously. Groups create groups, just as fractals do if you look close enough.

  9. I chose a picture of four hands of all different races connected with a globe drawn on top. This shows that people of all different races, values and norms can co-exist. The world is a diverse place and tolerance is needed, this is depicted by different races connecting the world.

  10. I chose a picture of different races of children reading together in a classroom. Since children are raised from a young age to be accepting of all people we are all able to live in one area. By having a common interest such as reading these children can bond with their similarities.

  11. I chose the picture of the shark and the remora. The remora lives attached to the sharks stomach. These two totally different fish, yet they get along together peacefully, and they are actually beneficial to each other.

  12. I chose the image of different people of different ethnicities, races and religions sitting on an imaginary ring around the Earth. This shows that there are many, many different races, ethnicities, cultures and religions, all with different values and norms. This shows that we all can exist in the same space because we all share something in common, we all live on Earth. We all have a common goal, and that is to take care of our planet and respect it and it's inhabitants. Also, for the most part, everyone wants to have world peace, that can only be achieved by working together.

  13. I brought in a picture of a world being held by the hands of all different types of people. I think think this represents how we share the world with everyone around us. We mostly live in peace with everyone and are modern society is starting to break through racial barriers.

  14. My picture was the picture of random people joined together in a group. The reason why i choose this photo was because in my essay i talked about how in America we are able to co-exist peacefully with people of different norms and religions. In the picture i choice there were people of different backgrounds and relgions so it was a perfect example of the isssues i adressed in my paper.
