Current Event 11/9 Justin Gough

My current event today was about how the federal government is now mandating the states to increase amenities in illegal alien detainment camps. The federal government is now asking that the states add services like arts and crafts, dance lessons, movie nights, continental breakfasts, and tutoring to their detainment camps. Groups like the ACLU, and Amnesty International say these changes are long overdue, but others disagree, saying that Americans already pay too much tax money on illegals, and already have to foot the bill for the detainees' health and dental care. They also say that the detainees are already treated better than inmates in regular jails, and that they should not be rewarded for breaking the law.
Clarifying Questions:

How long are detainees held?
Detainees are held until their deportation hearing, but can be held indefinitely if they are refused repatriation by their home country, or if the United States government has no diplomatic relations with their home country.

Where are the camps located?
Mostly in the border states, although there is one as close as Rhode Island.

Who are the camps run by?
The camps are run by independent corporations that are hired by ICE to build, operate, and secure the camps.

Probing Question:
Do you think that this treatment of detainees is too harsh, or too lax? Why?

  1. From reading this current event, in my opinion, I believe that the treatment to these detainees was extremely lax. I don't agree with this at all. Technically these illegal people are as much of criminals as murderers in the United States. I also think that they are getting over cared for because they get better treatment than a lot of other people in jails all over the country. If they are illegal in this country, my policy would be to send them back outside of the border immediately. This practice is sending the wrong message to others outside of the U.S. and will cause a great problem for future policy in the future.

  2. I believe that the treatment toward these illegal immigrants is to lax. The reasoning for this is that the illegal immigrants are breaking the law. It seems that they are living a better life in these camps than the average day American. With all of their opportunities they are getting including tutoring and even our tax money to support criminals. Many people in our country who are paying taxes do not even get some of these opportunities and how is that fair to them? I agree with Adam that illegal immigrants should be sent home immmediately. Also, if they have commited a crime that should be dealt with in their home country.

  3. I agree that the treatment of illegal immigrants is to lax. They are breaking the law and should be treated that way. I agree with Jackie when she says that they are living a better life in these camps than the average American. It doesn't make any sense that they would be treated in this way after breaking the law. I think that these people should be put into an actual jail, or as Adam said.. they should be sent outside of the border.

  4. the treatment is lax compared to other prisons in the nation these people have commited a crime and are being treated as tourist. Like Justin said in his speech these immigrants are still coming back to America because being held as a prisoner in America is still better than life in Mexico. The United States is in a loose loose situation; do they send them back. No they will try again in the future. Or do you hold them. With the way they are being held now It sounds like a vacation not really prison and it should be changed either harsher punishments or less laxidasical prison systems the government has to show that the system isn't meant to be a vacation its prison and it should be treated as such.

  5. i think that the treatment in these camps is way too lax. Just from listening to the presentation and reading the blog post it is ridiculous that they are treate better than people in prison. besides the fact that these are illegal immigrants its almost like they are being rewarded for breaking the law. if they are getting rewarded fobreaking the law what messages could this send out to people? these camps are just not a good idea if they are found to be illegal then they should be deported back to their home country, we shouldnt have to tax dollars to pay for this it just doesnt make sense if they arent suppose to be here in the first place

  6. I agree with Adam that the treatment is much too lax. These people are ILLEGAL and have broken the law in a severe way, yet we seem to be rewarding them for their actions. They have done something our country doesn't allow, but they are being treated fairly and are being given activities to entertain them. I think these people should be sent back to where they came from immediately and should only come back if they are legally eligible to live here.

  7. From what you reported i think they are being too lax. They get better treatment then people who actually live here and go to jail. They get free health care and free dental care. I feel like we are telling them what they are doing is fine and we shouldn't be. Everyone complains about immigrants as a problem but then we go out and we make a camp like this. It just doesn't make any sense. We are sending the wrong message by telling them if they are caugh they will be sent to a really nice camp and be allowed back in if they can sneak in.

  8. I believe that the treatment of the detainees is not harsh enough because we pay all these taxes and us Americans always end up with no money. The detainees get everything handed to them because of all the taxes and everything we let them do for free. They want to be in this country, they need to work just as hard as Americans do to get their lives started.

  9. I think that the detainees are being too comforted even before all the activities they want to give them. If they are caught doing something illegal, (being in the U.S.) then why are they being pampered to? They should be thrown in jail like the rest of the people in the country who break the law, and then they should be deported. If we are going to praise the illegals that come into the country, then more will come, and we will have to pay more money for them.

  10. I would have to say that the detainees are treated too generously. Let's not forget that these are ILLEGAL immigrants. Our tax payer's money should not be put towards giving them a place to live, so to speak. If they do insist on keeping these camps in the United States, I would say at least give them limited time there. At least make them hurry up on their legalization process. I mean, if they don't plan on becoming legal as soon as possible, they shouldn't be here.

  11. I would have to say that the detainees are too lax. I believe that these camps are not going to help on keeping immigrants out of the states I believe that they are just going to keep them coming here and that this is going to be an even worse problem then it is now. These people that are put into these camps have a better life then a lot of people in the states and that is just not right. I agree with Alex that these people should have a limit on staying in these camps. We are spending our tax dollars on them being there so the more people the more money we have to spend so this creates an economic problem throughout the states. Overall I actually think these camps are useless for the immigration problem we are having in the states.

  12. Personally I think that this treatment of detainees is a bit lax. I agree with Adam. They should be sent back over the border. However, I do not agree that during their stay they are considered the same as murderers. Technicalities may call for it but in all fairness they didn't take a human life. I think they should get a little more comfort but not too much. After all, some if not many of those who cross the border simply want a better life. I don't think we should put them in the same category with murderers for crossing a fence like that. Of course, the issue with people paying taxes enough can sway the idea but an argument with taxes spans countless other expenses. I'm not saying that they should go ahead with all of the improvements. However, not everything should be rejected. So ultimately, yes I believe that all of the proposed comforts are too much.

  13. I don't think that the law is too harsh because I think they deeserve it. they broke the law in the first place for comming here illegally. I don't really think there should even be a detained place for them because why should we give in to the people breaking the law. Instead, we should just send them back over the boarder until they immigrate the rigtht way

  14. I think that the treatment of these criminals is very lax. We are paying a huge bill to keep them in these camps that they don't even mind being in. If we keep treating them so well they will just continue to come back. We are creating a circle that only ends up costing us money. We basically catch them, pay for them to have a better life in these camps then they would in mexico, then we pay for them to be sent back. And because they don't get in trouble they just keep doing this. We have to step up and make harsher punishments for these people.

  15. I think it is way too lax. We have to pay the funds for these camps, which are supposed to be for criminals. In reality the illegal immigrants dont mind being caught and held in these camps, sometime it makes their life better. We shouldnt keep treating them that way. That won't stop illegal immigrants from entering the United States, that just makes them might want to do sneak in the country more.

  16. The treatment towards the detainee's is too lax. I think this because they are recieving way to many priveledges because they broke a federal law. They came here illegally and got caught, and are being treated very well for breaking the law. We are also paying a large fee for these people to be staying here because of what they did and thats not right.

  17. I think that this is absolutely ridiculous and I do not understand why we would ever give illegal immigrants such benefits. The new treatment in my opinion is way to lax. I am not saying that we should put them in the worst possible place, but by putting them in a setting that is almost like a vacation is just idiotic. I'm not going to lie if I went to Mexico illegally, and they had a program like the one we wont, I would be so relieved and actually encourage people to come. I think that other countries will see this as America being a joke and I do not think that this is the right way to go about the problem. We need more strict rules so it doesnt seem like we tolerate illegal immigration.

  18. I also believe that the treatment of the detainees is way to relaxed. How can the government be expected to be respected when the people that are coming into the country illegally are being treated better then most of the people on the streets in most big cities. Also the immigrants wont get the point because they can think that if they keep trying the consequences will never change and they will be cared for.

  19. I believe the treatment of ILLEGAL immigrant detainees is way too relaxed. Illegal immigrants should not be rewarded with such things as movie nights and dance classes...they broke the law and should be punished just like any other criminal. These camps could be another reason why immigrants are willling to risk coming over. From their point of view the camps are probably a better living condition then what they are used to. A lot of homeless non-criminals walk the streets everyday in terrible conditions struggling just to survive, and yet we let illegal criminals be treated better than homeless citizens in these camps. If you break the law you should expect consequences, not special treatment.
