Current Event

My current event article is called "Expansive Native American exhibit opening in NYC". My article was about expansive artifacts about the Native Americans, in which there is a museum opening in NYC displaying these artifacts. What is very interesting is that the artifacts are from 1400's. This is significant because the white man wasn't in America in the 1400's. By finding these artifacts we learn how the native Americans lived before the white man interrupted their world. Also we get a different look on Native Americans, we don't receive the stereotypical, feather and cross bow view on Indians.

Questions asked in class:
What are the connections between this exhibit and the Smithsonian?
The connections between this exhibit and the Smithsonian is that the artifacts were actually held by the Smithsonian in the moving process of the exhibit. The man that owns the artifacts moved a small NYC exhibit to the Smithsonian but received the artifacts back.

Probing Question:
Do you believe the Native Americans could have survived and have been strongly populated without the white man's invasion?

  1. I do think that they could have survived and have been strongly populated without the white man's invasion. I think if given the chance, they would be able to continue their culture and flourish. The white man came in and conquered their own land and made them basically slaves in their own land, but I think if they had time to grow that they would be just as successful as any other race. The reason I think they could survive is because they found great land that everybody wanted and the Native American's knew how to use the land and its resources correctly. I think they would have flourished if given the opportunity.

  2. I agree with Mitch that if the Native Americans were given a chance to continue to live life on their own terms that they would have flourished and prospered just like any other population. It was with the white mans invasion that brought on their downfall to how they live in todays society. If they were left alone they would have survived and become strongly populated.

  3. I also believe that the Native Americans would have survived and been strongly populated without the white mans invasion. Before the white man had arrived the people had been living perfectly fine with their hunting and gathering ways. If the white people never came they would not have been introduced to certain diseases that the white people where immune to. With out the white men invading on the Native Americans they could have stayed whee they were and continued the way that they had survived from the years before.

  4. I agree with everyone so far that the Native Americans would have survived if the white man had not invaded. There is evidence all across the world with different native people still survivng today with little or no influence of technology created by the white man. some of the native people that have lived in the Amazon Rain Forest were unknown to white people who lived in the same nation as them and yet all those cultures still survived many years as would have the Native Americans but it was still only a matter of time before conflict occured but if the conflict was to happen at a later time the Native Americans would have still been a powerful culture.

  5. I also agree that the Native Americans would have survived and strongly populated the white man's invasion because there are a lot of Native Americans. There is also a lot of cool interesting things and traditions that they do. I personally like learning new things, so I would be interested. The Native Americans have a strong culture and can be passed very easily to others who do not have the same culture.

  6. I agree with Mitch that the Native Americans would have survived if the white man had not invaded because if they were left alone to live life and learn from their mistakes, then they too could be just as successful as the White Americans. There are many things that the Native Americans do to survive day by day as of today, such as gathering water each day from a well like the Navajo Indian Reservation. If they were able to continue living the way they did before the white man's invasion, I think that the Native Americans would not have as many of the problems that they deal with now.

  7. I agree with everyone else in saying that the Native Americans could have survived and strongly populated the country if the White man hadnt come and taken over. However, I disagree with Emily in her saying that they would be just as successful as the White Americans. Seeing what theyve failed to do, even with the lack of resources, in the progression of technology and medicine, etc, I believe the Natives would be something like a 3rd world country today. I think that they would be surviving, but not with many luxuries.

  8. I think that the Native Americans' would have been fine, and better off if the Whites had not taken over there culture and nature. The Native Americans lived in a way where they did not abuse nature, they didn't take anything for granted, and they had their own government in a sense. For thousands of years the Native Americans have been around and took care of our country, while the white men have only been here for a few hundred years and we have already whipped out bufflo and have problems just like any other country. Alex mentioned that the Native Americans would be seen as people in a third world country, and that makes me think of all the tribes in South America for example that are just being discovered today. I think that eventually the Native I feel like they would still be as cultured as they were thousands of years ago.
I do not agree with Emily aswell, and don't think that they would have adapted to the world and become as successful as the White people. It is not in the Native Americans nature to do they things that we have done the last three hundred years, and I think America probably would have been beautiful and well preserved if we did not invade.

  9. . I agree with a lot of the people above. When looking at the Native Americans past they could have survived if the white men had not invaded. Reason for this would be that each culture learns different ways to do things in life, so if they were left to do their own thing things would have been different. I also believe that the white men had also helped the Native Americans but not as much as they wanted. As Kayla said people like to learn news ways on doing things and these new ways could be easier.
So, I do believe that they could have survived but I do also believe that the white men had also helped them in some way or another.

  10. I think that the Native Americans would have been fine if the white men had never shown up. They knew the land well adn how to cultivate it. They knew how to hunt and what to hunt. They used everything of the animals they did hunt. Their herbal medicines worked well enough for the deseases they encountered. They probably wouldn't have had to deal with small pox or the measles. Many of the diseases from today would never had made it to this country if the white men had never shown up.

  11. I think that the Native Americans could have not only survived but prospered without the invasion of the white man. They were clearly able to survive without the white man before we came to America. I think that if given the chance, they would have been able to use their land properly, because they would have been able to use whatever land they pleased. They wouldn't have been forced into a specific area. They could hunt across the country if they wanted, and follow and chase after wherever they could find food, instead of being trapped in designated areas.

  12. I believe that if the white man didn't enter the Indian's world then they would have done well for a many years. However because of their culture and love for the land over all else eventually another race would come and take them over just like we did. The only reason the white man was the one who destroyed their culture was because in that time the European people were looking to expand because of lack of land. Eventually people in Asia or South America or even Africa would go and take their land.
